Um negro de poder no Amazonas da primeira república: Monteiro Lopes, o jurista e deputado (1892-1910)

Abstract

The present work, trough of the narrative and analysis on the historical figure of Manoel da Motta Monteiro Lopes, the first confirmed black federal deputy with affirmative speech of Brazil, besides incidental use of other trajectories and connected questions, intents to perform problematization of the black social mobility, concentrated in the nominal scale, the first two decades of the Republic. Starts introducing guidelines and development choices and is organized in three chapters: the first one is of thematic introductory character, presenting facts, data and essential concepts for a better understanding of the context in which the investigated be inserted, as well as, of the generalized difficulties on count of the racism that reached him and to other “colored men” of his time. The second chapter is biographical, consolidating information registered in works of third ones on the period previous to his presence in the Amazon in the XIX where acted like Public prosecutor in 1892, and his subsequent trajectory in the federal capital, when they were added of information that still had not been systematized, obtained from primary sources relative to the period before and in which it was in the Amazon in that period, his long visit as Federal Deputy in 1910 and the subsequent acting on behalf of the State. The third chapter brings an analysis on his positions and strategies of social mobility, besides on his historical legate and historiography, followed by our conclusions.
