Efeitos isolados e associados do diabetes mellitus tipo 2 e da doença arterial periférica sobre a arquitetura muscular, qualidade muscular e capacidade funcional

Resumo

The objective of the study was to evaluate the isolated and associated effects of T2DM and PAD on muscle architecture and quality and functional capacity. The study included 24 elderly females, being GDM2 + DAP (n=8), GDM2 (n=8) and GC (n=8), all matched by age. The participants underwent body composition assessment by plethysmography, architecture assessment (VL and TA) and muscle quality (RF and GM) by means of ultrasound images and three functional tests to assess functional capacity. ANOVA was used to compare means between groups, correlation test adopting α = 0.05 and linear regression analysis between the performance of functional tests and the independent variables that had significant correlations. The results indicated significant differences for GDM2+DAP and GDM2 when compared with GC in the variables HbA1C (p=0.000), ITB-PD (p=0.001) and ITB-TD (p=0.000). Significant differences between ITB-TD of GDM2+DAP in relation to CG (p=0.001) and GDM2 (p=0.000). Significant differences (p=0.004) were also found between CG (32.85 ± 4.63 a.u) and DMD (43.62 ± 5.92 a.u) for the intensity of the medial gastrocnemius echo. In conclusion, the muscle architecture, especially the length of the VL fascicle, was negatively affected both by the presence of DM2 and by the association between DM2+PAD when compared to the CG. We also observed reductions in the muscle quality of GM and GDM2 compared to CG, indicating that Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus may compromise muscle composition without affecting functional capacity.
