Resumo

The experience of living in cities places residents in the face of an ambivalence in the face of criminality and violence that are present in urban everyday life, feeling safe or afraid, or better, security and insecurity, permeate the feeling of the residents in the face of the landscapes, especially those landscapes that by means of symbols and elements feed the fear. Therefore, the inhabitant is able to perceive which landscapes bring him more insecurity. This aspect then became the main base that boosted this research. Thus, the general objective of this study is: to understand the phenomenon of violence and criminality in the city of Manaus based on the perception and representation of high school students through mental maps. To achieve this goal, we seek the methodological principles of phenomenology, having the perception as an important category, to understand the landscapes studied, being the mental maps the main elements of this research. , The subjects involved were 36 students enrolled in the 3rd grade of high School, in the morning shift in the academic year 2018, at the state school Desembargador André Vidal de Araújo, located on the avenue Timbiras S/N neighborhood Cidade Nova, northern area of Manaus. Of the maps elaborated by the students we selected 12 that are presented and discussed in this work and represent the elements that symbolize criminality and violence in Manaus
