Resumo

The study discusses about the school libraries their performance inside and outside the school, with the community. It aims to demonstrate how the applicability of communicational ecosystems in the context of the school library can contribute to the construction of a communication, information and learning center, capable of making this informational space fulfilling its social role. The research is dimensioned in the one of the school libraries that attend the students from the 1st to the 9th grade of the basic education, of the public and private education networks in Brazil. The research is based on systemic theory focusing on communicational ecosystems, directed to the school environment and the school library. Documentary and bibliographical research, of qualitative character, developed through search, analysis and description of theoretical references and other sources related to the theme, such as books, scientific articles, legislation and documents in electronic media, among others. It presents a history of school libraries in Brazil, as well as national laws and actions aimed at their existence and functioning in schools and in the community. The study showed cases where the systemic concepts applied to the school library environment can effectively contribute to its social role, as a space directed to the development and support of teaching activities, as well as an active center for information and communication in the community.
