Resumo
In this work we analyze the conflict in relations between white and indian people and the religiosity in the Alto Rio Negro in the early XX century, based on representations of Don Frederico Costa contained mainly in Pastoral Letter on April 11, 1909. It is our intention to analyze how Don Frederico Costa perceived these aspects of reality in the Alto Rio Negro and expressed them in the Letter. In order to understand the cultural factors that have influenced the way how Dom Frederico Costa interpreted and transcribed on the real situation found by him in Alto Rio Negro, we also seek to investigate the most significant aspects of the process of priestly formation, highlighting the influence of Don Antonio Costa de Macedo in the seminar of Belém, and the ultramontane influence of the period who spent in Europe. After these analysis we approach social, cultural and economic situation of the Alto Rio Negro and its influences on the relationship between white and indian people. Then we set off for a broader discussion about the place of Indians in Brazilian society, highlighting the positions of Don Frederico Costa in relation to positivists indigenous and Hermann von Ihering. Finally we turn to the analysis of religiosity found by Don Frederico Costa in the Alto Rio Negro and how he judged this aspect of reality and sought to interfere in seeking to reopen the missions in the region. We analyzed the ecclesial project of Don Frederico to the Rio Negro, within the ecclesial situation at international, national and regional levels.
