Introduction: Communication is one of the main work tools used by the health team. Many flaws in this process occur due to the absence of active listening, lack of empathy and non-dialogical communication, restricted to the mere transfer of information. Objectives: to evaluate the patients' perception of communication with the health team, in addition to their satisfaction and understanding of the information provided about their health status. Method: cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach using a data collection instrument developed by the author herself and application of the Mini Mental State Examination. The sample studied consisted of 30 women hospitalized in the preoperative period at the gynecology service. The collected data were typed and tabulated using the Microsoft Office Excel program, version 2007. To verify the association between the questions, the chi-square test was used. Data analysis was performed using the R 4.2.0 software, considering a significance level of 0.05 (5%) for decision making. Results: The women were mostly married, brown, Catholic, from the capital, aged between 40 and 49 years old, with between 9 and 11 years of study, with "domestic" occupation, income of 1-2 minimum wages and classified within the Brucki's criteria in the MMSE, which showed statistical significance at the intersection with the years of study. The nursing technicians explained about the medications, but the nurses did not advise on the dressing in the postoperative period. The nursing team did not question whether the patients had any doubts, unlike the physicians. However, the doctors did not explain the possible complications, care and medications needed in the postoperative period, using difficult language during communication. Most did not know the medications they were using, the necessary care for the postoperative wound, the risks and complications of the surgery and care after discharge in relation to the resumption of daily activities. The patients were satisfied with the communication, had no doubts about their diagnosis, but sought information on the internet about their condition. Conclusion: the results draw the attention of professionals, managers and researchers to the need for improvements in the communication process between the health team and the patient, not restricting this process to a mere transfer of information, but always using dialogic communication that guarantees quality and safety in the care provided.
