Resumo

Background: Waiting line for surgery is a result of the mismatch between demand and supply. Surveys, particularly population-based, are the most comprehensive option for you to know. The absence of studies that make scientific analyzes of queueing for surgeries in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus motivated this study. Objectives: The objective of this research was to investigate the repressed demand for surgeries in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus and to estimate the prevalence of the repressed demand for surgeries and the demand for surgical specialty in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, to describe the epidemiological characteristics Of the repressed demand of surgeries, to identify the factors associated with the repressed demand of surgeries. Method: This is a cross-sectional population-based study conducted in 2015. For the sampling process, 420 census tracts were randomly selected. In the selected census tracts, 8,587 households were drawn. In the residences selected were registered all residents ≥ 18 years and drawn one resident per household. Where a validated and structured questionnaire was applied to objective questions. The repressed demand for surgery was gauged by the question: "Did any doctors say that you should have surgery that you have not done yet?" All interviewees who signaled pent-up demand were later contacted by telephone to know the reason for waiting and type of surgical procedure. Results: Four thousand and one subjects were interviewed in their homes. Among those interviewed, 561 individuals, 14% (95% CI: 13-15%), reported suppressed demand for surgery. Among the surgical specialties that have orthopedic (18.1%), gynecological (17.0%), ophthalmologic (12.4%), neurosurgery (10.8%) and general surgery (10.2%). Approximately 12% of respondents funded the surgical procedure in private health services. Conclusions: The data indicate that in every 100 adults in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, 14 need surgery and are in the queueing, which postpones access to public treatment, making part of the population with their own resources . The areas of orthopedic surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and general surgery were the ones with the greatest demands. They are most affected by the pent-up demand for surgeries for the elderly, retirees, women and domestic workers.
