O caso do Massacre do Capacete no Alto Solimões/AM, década de 1980: genocídio indígena, arquivos da violência e semeadura da memória

Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate practices of violence against the Ticuna of Alto Solimões, in Amazonas, who unfolded the case known as the “Massacre do Capacete” and whose denunciations point to the problem of indigenous genocide in contemporary Brazil. The historical process in which Brazilian criminal/judicial institutions dealt with this type of criminal action was enmeshed by various social practices of denouncement, linked to disputes over memory and movements for rights among communities. The use of the genocide category allowed the reflexion on specific forms of updated violence against indigenous people, practices that are not restricted to extermination or to the past of these populations. The Ticuna of the São Leopoldo indigenous area, demarcated throughout the 1980s, produced their own reports about the massacre and broader themes about the violation of their rights. Their political struggles for the right to communication and public participation show movements of not only local dimensions, but the national circularity of their actions for autonomy, under a plural context of strong opposition to the tutelary power.
