Euclides da Cunha: Integração, Paisagem e Topofilia

Abstract

This work constitutes an Exegetical exercise about Os Sertões and À Margem da História, by Euclides da Cunha. The aim is to carry out a direct comparison between the two works in the context of Regional Integration issues, Landscape and Topophilia. The objectives were to identify how the author understands and proposes the integration of Northeast and North to the Brazilian nation, and yet, understand how the author classifies the landscape, people and spaces of the Northeast and Amazon. The methodology used was the bibliographical research, performing an examination of research interest books, without neglecting the other writings of the author, as well as secondary sources, extracting subsidies for the construction of the work. Euclides da Cunha experienced many of the most remarkable historical events in the history of Brazil, in the midst of the change of political regime of the Empire to the presidential Republic in 1889. Since the first letters the author concerned in writing to interfere with the social reality in which he lived, enrolling in the Gallery of the authors who sought to define the Brazil. The subject of regional integration is their great contribution, being pioneer in relation to the integration of the Amazon. Euclides describes thoroughly the landscape to highlight the struggle of backcountry against nature, showing his bravery, psychological trait that makes him triumphing over a hostile environment and that is proposed by the author as a model for the nation. In dealing with the landscape, the author left see frankly disgusted with the Amazonian landscape. In this work sought to explain that strangeness expression of a topophilic feeling, caused by the author's confrontation with a different landscape topographic model that evokes feelings of beautiful and pleasant, configured for his ambiance in mountainous region.
