Efeito da terapia de fotobiomodulação sobre a dor pós-operatória do tratamento endodôntico: estudo clínico controlado e randomizado

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation therapy on pain after treatment of root canal performed with the WaveOne® reciprocanting system, based on a prospective, randomized, double blind, clinical trial. The study included 60 patients, mean age 27 years, randomly divided into 2 groups, with indication of treatment of root canal in lower molar teeth diagnosed with Pulpitis. In the experimental group (PBM), the treatment of root canal was performed with the WaveOne® system and immediately the photobiomodulation with low intensity laser irradiation. In the control group (WO), the treatment of root canal was performed with the WaveOne® system. Root canal treatment was performed by a single operator, specialist in endodontics. The pain evaluation was performed at 6h, 12h, and 24h intervals after treatment of root canal was performed. The occurrence and intensity of pain were recorded on two pain scales: verbal description (VRS) and discrete numeral (NRS). The incidence of postoperative pain in the WO group, which did not receive irradiation, was 36.6% in the 24-hour evaluation, whereas in the PBM group only 6.6% for the same time period. In the analysis of the independent variables, overextension of cement increased pain intensity 8.4 times on the VRS scale and 1.02 times on the NRS scale. It was concluded that the risk for pain after root canal treatment was higher in patients who did not receive low intensity laser irradiation.
