O inferno é o paraíso: análise comparativa entre o romance A Selva, de Ferreira de Castro, e os filmes homônimos, de Márcio Souza e Leonel Vieira

Abstract

A comparative study between the novel A Selva (The Jungle), by Ferreira de Castro, and the two homonymous movies inspired by this work: A Selva, by the amazonian Márcio Souza, and A Selva, by the portuguese Leonel Vieira. The research analyzes how the amazonian rubber plantations and the amazonian rubber boom are told in the novel and in each one of its adaptations to the cinema, addressing also the relationship between the Literature and the Cinema based on the theoretical assumptions of the Comparative Literature and of the Conceptual Metaphor. Associated with the theoretical framework the following thematic axes: The history of amazon rubber boom and a panorama of the literature that represents it; Biobibliographical notes on Ferreira de Castro and the novel A Selva; The dialogue between the Literature and Cinema; Reflections on the metaphoric phenomenon. The Dissertation presents the following division: The chapter “The Amazonian rubber boom and its representation in literature fiction” discusses the historical period of the amazonian rubber boom, with a survey on the representation of this period in the literature and the region and study the novel A Selva, by Ferreira de Castro, exploring the several aspects of the amazon rubber plantations characterized in the work; The chapter “The novel A Selva: hell in Paradise” contains an overview of Ferreira de Castro’s novel, exploring details of the narrative; The chapter “Through the Meanderings of Comparative Literature” deals with Comparative Literature and the dialogues between Literature and Cinema, applied to A Selva; The chapter “A Selva – multiple views” analyzes the adaptations of Ferreira de Castro’s novel, drawing a comparative table between the three works and presenting the researcher's reading.
