Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has long been related as the
main cause of malignant neoplasia of the cervix. With the advancement of new
diagnostic methods this virus has also been related to other cancers,
such as penis, anal canal, prostate, lung and head and neck neoplasms.
And in these cases of head and neck, the presence of HPV infection is
related to the prognosis and treatment of the disease. In cavity neoplasms
oral and oropharynx the relationship with HPV infection has already been established and
stratification of these patients into virus-positive or non-virus-positive groups helps to
promote better therapy and treatment response. This study aims to evaluate the
prevalence of HPV 16 infection in patients with oral cavity neoplasia and
oropharynx and stratify into groups according to P16 protein expression,
relating to radiotherapy treatment offered to patients at FCECON
treated from 2009 to 2013 and the response to treatment. Tissue was analyzed
paraffin-embedded lesions of patients who were segregated according to the diagnosis
of oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasia, in HPV positive or not groups
16. An analysis was made of the relationship between infection and response to therapy.
proposal (radiotherapy and chemotherapy). In addition, patients were stratified
in three groups according to P16 protein expression: HPV16-negative / P16
negative, HPV16 negative / P16 positive and HPV16 positive / P16 positive. Regarding
89.94% were male, the average age was 60.77 years,
64% had an oropharyngeal lesion and 36% had an oral cavity. Most of the
patients (93.7%) were at an advanced stage. The prevalence was observed
of 16.67% positivity for HPV16 infection and finally in P16 research
18.52% were positive. Only 3 patients attested positivity
for both exams (HPV16 + and P16 +). The Routine Use of P16 Research by
immunohistochemistry and HPV investigation of the lesion in all patients with
diagnosis of oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasia should be implanted, taking into
since there are changes in staging of these neoplasms when positive for
HPV and improvement of therapeutic response.
