Resumo
Obesity has become a global epidemic and affects more than 600 million adults
worldwide (WHO, 2016). Currently, it is considered a serious public health problem.
This is a systematic review that examined studies on the effect of acupuncture and
herbal medicine on weight loss in obese adults. Searches were performed in MEDLINE
(via PubMed), EMBASE (via ScienceDirect), LILACS (via VHL) and Cochrane
databases. Original studies that evaluated the use of these integrative practices for the
treatment of obesity in adults, white and black, non-indigenous, without limits of gender
and nationality, were included. Two independent researchers used Rayyan QCRI
software for article retrieval and duplicate removal. In addition, Mendeley Reference
Manager software was used for reference management. To analyze the
methodological quality, the PEDro Scale and the risk of bias were used, using the Risk
of Bias (RoB2) tool. The level of certainty of the evidence was conducted using the
Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE)
system. The qualitative synthesis of data was approached through the effect of weight
loss in adults who used one or a combination of these two practices (acupuncture
and/or phytotherapy). In view of this, the importance of this review is emphasized to
compose the current evidence on the effect of acupuncture and phytotherapy in the
treatment of obese adults.
