Resumo

Results of research conducted in 2011, in the municipality of Codajás, Amazonas which aimed to analyze the perception of environmental health in a group of neighborhood residents Vitória, the peripheral zone of the municipality. The sample was selected using the criterion of representativeness, opting for the selection of the most active residents at meetings convened by the district leadership that revolve around discussions on the problems of the place. The study allowed the knowledge of the reality of the residents, showing the process of occupation, their living conditions and how they perceive the relationship between health and environment in the urban hinterland. The research methodology focused qualitative approach and used two techniques: semi-structured interviews and focus groups conducted with respectively, 15 and 7 people. In this latter technique, we used old photos and current neighborhood as a way to stimulate perceptions of issues facing the research goal. At the end of data collection were performed organization and interpretation from the content analysis. The results indicated unsustainability urban situations result of the inability of the legitimacy of urban policies, reflecting lack of investment in infrastructure and inability to democratize access to urban services, resulting in precarious contexts of social and environmental conditions that affect the health of residents and place, reflecting a process cluttered urban ally of the absence of essential public goods and services, as well as the absence of more active social movements that claim. This scenario has the backdrop of social inequality and environmental responsible for the appearance of situations of social injustice and environmental, as global processes, appear also in small towns, compromising access to the rights to life, good living conditions and the right to the city.
