Resumo

The development of reading capacity is a key indicator for the exercise of citizenship and productive role in society. Given this need, we tried to, with this research, know the reader profile of high school students from public schools in Humaitá - AM and the role played by the respective schools about the encouragement and support to the practice of reading in order to concatenate new systematized knowledge on the subject. The educational field is a vast field to carry out work with regard to the development of research projects. So, research is one of the aspects of teaching, nothing more obvious that the teacher-educator to look into problems to be revealed, analyzed and made available to the general public. Based on this reasoning, this study was developed at the master's level (in education) with the above-mentioned objective guided by line 3 (Training and Praxis Educator front of the Amazon Challenges) of the Post-Graduate Education - Faculty of PPGE Education - FACED the Federal University of Amazonas - UFAM. The methodology is anchored in phenomenological perspective of qualitative nature. The data about the support the knowledge offered by the participating schools in the survey were collected through a questionnaire to employees responsible for the operation of libraries (in the case of School 4, the questionnaire was answered by the management itself after information gathered, according to manager next to the teacher responsible for the operation of the library). The students of the 3rd year of high school, to collect data about the player's profile thereof, were distributed questionnaires with closed questions. The questions were prepared thoroughly in order to meet the research objectives. The questionnaire for employees responsible for the operation of libraries has been scheduled according to the availability of time each. And the students, the application was in the classroom during school hours previously scheduled with managers and teachers. Responded to the survey 101 students male and female, representing a total of 21% of the 479 students enrolled in the 3rd year of high school of the five public schools in Humaitá-AM district, a manager and four employees responsible for the operation of respective schools. In this research were observed ethical and methodological procedures in force according to the literature of the searched area. The results showed, among other information, the existence of poor infrastructure for reading in some schools and that: (i) the profile of reading the participants is negative in relation to Brazil, which, according to the IBGE, has a player profile negative for some countries in South America, Europe and the United States; (ii) 75% learned to read at the age of five to seven years of age; (iii) 69.3% often read magazines; (iv) 95% of participants reported that they usually read books on their own; (v) 36% said they read a book a year (vi); 59.4% read up to two books per year and 3% read more than five books a year which is close to official data indicating low average reading of Brazil compared to other countries; (vii) 42.6% of participants engaged in reading only two hours per week; (viii) 13% of respondents spend ten hours or more a week for reading and (ix) 57.4% consider owning middle school performance (5-7 points in grade point averages) and 42.6% consider owning upper middle (8 to 10 points). These figures reflect the reader's profile on school performance; (x) 63.4% of respondents who do not read newspapers and get information through books, magazines, television, radio and internet. It follows, then, with this study, the reader profile of students of the 3rd year of high school, public schools in the municipality of Humaitá - Amazonas is unsatisfactory considering indexes of other nation states and the country itself. On the other hand, contributed knowledge can contribute to the administration of the local education system with regard to the proposition of policies that can support the creation of specific programs and projects to increase and improve the reading conditions in high school and, especially, fundamentally, since this teaching
