Magia e Inquisição : O “Mundo Magico” do Grão-Pará e Maranhão (1763-1769).

Abstract

This work has as main purpose to extend the knowledge on the subject of "magic" in an attempt to contribute to other work ever produced. The magic has been a subject much developed over the years, and the theme of the relationship with our day-to-day has become increasingly noticeable as societies develop. This paper seeks to understand the meaning of magic in colonial times through the analysis of inquisitorial proceedings related to covenant charges with the Devil, also seeks to understand the meaning of magical practices in Europe, but especially in Portugal, and comparing it with the context Luso-Brazilian, in an attempt to investigate possible conflictual relations or similarities in dealing with practitioners of magic. The contextual and temporal focus of this research will be the visitation period at Grand Para and Maranhao 1763-1769.
