Resumo
The dissertation "Preserving Memory: Archaeological Collections and Domestic
Collections in Maués, Amazonas" explores the formation and preservation of
archaeological collections in Brazil, focusing on domestic collections in the city of
Maués, Amazonas. The research is divided into two main parts. The first part presents
the theoretical and historical foundations of the study of material culture in Brazil,
discussing fundamental concepts of archaeology and the history of the discipline in the
national context. The second part applies these theoretical foundations in a case study
in Maués, reflecting on the archaeological collection in the Amazon and its implications
for the preservation of Brazilian cultural heritage. The dissertation highlights the
importance of archaeological collections for understanding social and historical
relations, as well as contemporary challenges in their management and interpretation.
The final discussion connects the case study results with existing literature, proposing
pathways for the valorization and repatriation of artifacts, as well as suggesting the
creation of community museums.
