Resumo
The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate, under the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis, the institutionalized elements of late modernity that influence the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of personal identities. Its specific objectives are: to discuss and relate discursive evidence and indicators — verbal or imagery — relevant to social identity, discovered through the analysis of the episode "The National Anthem", part of the science fiction television series Black Mirror; as well as evaluating the formation of resistant personal identities, culturally and discursively constituted, as a reasonable practice to face social pressures concretized in the scope of late modernity. Taking as a starting point the thinking of the British sociologist Anthony Giddens (1991, 1996, 2002), and theoretically and methodologically based on the Faircloughian Discourse Analysis (2001, 2003), the results demonstrate that the entities privileged by capitalism, ranked according to the scope and level of power, such as the capitalist Nation-State, the Government, the Family, the People and, in a special way, the Media, pressure and dominate the subjects through discourse, tensioning their identities at all levels, from the psyche to the body, transforming their personal views and creating fragmented representations according to the demand of maintaining the system itself. As a possible solution to the problem, the formation of a resistant identity was proposed, based on Castells (2018) in four stages: the positioning of the subject in the adaptive spectrum of the radical engagement type; personal investment in a journey of self-discovery; the selection of influences on identity, carried out through emancipatory procedures; and the use of media resources for the promotion and protection of identities.
