Resumo

The low education among youths and adults is one of the social problems that still is part of the Brazilian reality. Young people and adults who have not completed basic education, are excluded from the labour market, cultural, civil and social rights. Noticed during the history of education that this gap is a result of a legacy of social inequality that has always favoured the rich and that young people and adults returning to school are treated as mere recipients of knowledge. Given these concerns the present study aims to examin e the social representation of school built by pupils and students of EJA, identify how to organize and to structure the content of social representation of school and verify that the social representation of school to help or not expulsion or return of th ese agents of the school. The survey was conducted by techniques such as free association of words, socioeconomic questionnaire and interviews. We work with the central core that allows find the possible elements that form the representation. The data rece ived analysis of content of speech of students who participated in free association and interviews. 100 students attended the State School Getúlio Vargas. The results show that social representations of school involve the following categories: teacher, learning, education. The meanings attributed the categories teacher, learning and education interact with each other when the students emphasize the importance of the teacher in teaching-learning process, the teacher appears as one that will contribute to wha t students will learn again, learning to them is essential to make them participatory course people of a complex society the capitalist coma. This is clear when they say that without learning and without education is not anything in that life, that we need someone to be learning and education Tuesday. Not that they do not recognize as anyone, but the meaning of being someone is associated with a representation of that school hegemonic through formal education will help them to improve life, have a job, to a ttend a college, or in other words is a possibility of redemption of a self -esteem undermined by the difficulties of life, including resignations and deprivations of study.
