Do templo de taipa ao templo de pedra: a construção da igreja matriz de Manaus (1858-1878)

Abstract

This work has the objective to show that Matriz Church Temple of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is a strong element of the transformation that happened in the urban stitch of Manaus. For this way we see the city as an urban organism multifaceted that is told to a connection, existent between the constitution of an urban power that organize and configure its space, expressed mainly through its monumentality. The urban architecture, therefore, represents the city writing because it is the way the men mark their passage. For this reason, we try to elucidate the process of Matriz Church Temple of Nossa Senhora da Conceição construction, in Manaus (1858 1877), and how this process is connected to the policy configuration and administrative Amazonas Province. Following this problematic we opted to trace a way that begun in the Portuguese occupation and installation around the Barra do Rio Negro Fort until the definition of this space today denominated Manaus, having as priority the religious temple building study and trying to demonstrate that the architecture identification has a lot meaningful elements that build itself a discourse and reveal a choice. In last instance the architecture work materializes the thinking of its epoch, revealing an established society.
