Gender and Memory: The trajectory of Dona Maria da Conceição Silva From the São Raimundo neighborhood to managing the Banco do Estado do Amazonas (State Bank of Amazonas) (1957-1980)
This dissertation, entitled “Gender and Memory: The trajectory of Dona Maria da Conceição Silva From the São Raimundo neighborhood to managing the Banco do Estado do Amazonas (State Bank of Amazonas) (1957-1980) is the result of a master's degree research carried out in the Postgraduate Program in History from the Federal University of Amazonas – PPHG UFAM, which seeks to historicize Maria da Conceição Silva (77 years old), born in Manaus-AM, retired banker and former mayor of the municipality of Urucará, in the interior of the state of Amazonas. From the History of Women and Gender Relations, we propose to verify how the discourses and representations of gender inequalities are expressed and implemented in Dona Conceição's personal, educational and professional trajectory. To develop this research, we used Oral History methods that allow us to highlight subjects silenced by Traditional History. Initially, we investigated Maria da Conceição's childhood with her family in a peripheral neighborhood of the city of Manaus, her first perceptions of the world, in this time and space, which constitute the capital of Amazonas in a process of expansion and urbanization, which occurred in the middle of the 20th century. We highlight the memories of the first steps of her educational trajectory, in a religious school in Amazonas, seeking to reflect on how gender inequality and social inequality mark her trajectory from a very early age, where her family and society imposed on her an education model aimed at religion, for the home or for teaching, totally the opposite of her dreams of a professional career as a banker, and as she had already displayed attitudes of insubordination to pre-established social standards since her childhood. In this endeavor, we seek to highlight the memories of Maria da Conceição's adolescence about her insertion and experience at the Technical School of Commerce of Amazonas, the problems and inequalities faced in this elitist environment in Manaus. As well as examining the tessiture of her relationships of friendship and power with important figures in state politics, which enabled her to reach the Banco do Estado do Amazonas. Taking as a focus, the professional performance of Mrs. Maria da Conceição Silva, under the management of the Bank from the State of Amazonas-BEA, the sources allow us to understand the process of building this woman's memory about her own life experience, being a young woman in a leadership position at the Manacapuru-AM agency. In this statement, we explain about the Process of expansion and internalization of bank branches, based on the Amazon Development Projects, managed by the military government in Brazil, how this woman has her personal and professional trajectory constituted in this situation, where she takes possession of her own protagonism, being a recognized banker, executor of development projects in Amazonas, she becomes manager at the branch in Brasília and installer of the bank in Urucará, where in this statement we describe these experiences, paying attention to the perception that even though she is a woman of power, she is not free from the discourses of gender inequality.
