O gás metano do aterro sanitário de Manaus e as possibilidades de uso social

Abstract

The landfill of Manaus has an accumulation of methane gas that can be scaled to be repurposed in power generation. Taking into account this possibility, this study was aimed at exploring the capability of producing methane in the landfill of Manaus and reflect on their social use. In terms of specific aims: (a) quantify the production of waste generated per capita in Manaus and social cost to the exchequer of his collection, (b) to quantify the capacity of methane gas daily by the landfill, (c) identify the best alternative use of methane gas to generate electricity. In a didactic manner, the conceptual framework was limited in Historic origins of methane gas, its chemical composition, the formation of biogas, since it is a gas from the first generation, since that results from decomposition of organic waste and the empirical evidence its use on an industrial scale. The analysis methodology was based on an interview with the engineer of the company responsible for managing the landfill, since the essential data to answer the object of research had been compiled by the company from technical studies contract. Thus, there would be no need to go all the way long and costly. The results showed that is collected from the city of Manaus, on average, one hundred thousand tons of waste months. The garbage is taken to landfill by Tumpex company that has a contract with the Municipality of Manaus and administered in conjunction with the company Emterpa. The accumulation of waste is responsible for producing 15 thousand cubic meters of methane per hour. As we do not have a definite use for its economic use, the gas is burned to be released in the atmosphere, thereby reducing the level of pollution. The rational use of methane gas requires high investment in equipment, so that the government or the private sector could create conditions for use. It was concluded that it is perfectly feasible for use of biogas in the landfill from Manaus to energy production, provided they make investments and take the necessary precautions.
