Resumo
A study was realized among Manaus blood donors able to donate from January 1992
to December 2003. The objective was to analyze blood donors HIV prevalence. Donors’ data
was obtained through HEMOAM’s SAD (Donors Follow-up System) through which were
identified reactive and non-reactive anti-HIV subjects. According to the adopted reactivity
criteria, we analyzed: total prevalence, prevalence according to sex, age group, donor type and
donation type. During this period 360.935 alogeneic donations were collected from 265.018
receivable donors. From these, 83,3% were men and 16,6% were female. Most donors were
21 to 30 years old. 353 donors were HIV reactive: as a result, the prevalence was of 97,8/100
000 donations and 133,2/100 000 donors. Among men, total prevalence was of 139,0/100 000
and among women it was of 101,1/100 000. Among first time donors it was of 212,8/100 000
donors and among repeat donors it was of 72,7/100 000. Among voluntary donors it was of
169,0/100 000 and among replacement donors it was of 114,3/100 000. Seroconversion was
of 68,6/100 000. Between 1997 and 2003, an epidemiologic investigation was made about
risk behaviors. Two hundred eighty three HIV positive donors were asked to come, and
43,5% actually came. There were 84,6 % men and 15,4% women that answered about risk
behaviors. It was observed that the most related risk behaviors were homosexual and bisexual
relations. There was a statistically significant increase trend of prevalence of reactive HIV
individuals among first time and replacement donors
