The habitation politics of social interest states that the worth habitation cannot be restricted only
to the building of the houses itself but must embody the social work with the socially vulnerable
families, with the objective of motivating the participation and the autonomic organization of
the families. However, what has been observed in the accomplishment of some programs is the
attempt of exerting control over the families, without involving them or considering their
opinions. In this sense the communitarian psychology presents a relevant contribution about the
participation processes and can contribute to motivate and to strengthen the participation of the
families in the social work, considering the opinion of the candidates in all the steps of
implementation of the program.Nowadays, the program Minha Casa Minha Vida (PMCMV) is
being implemented in Colonia Antonio Aleixo, with the objective of benefiting with worth
habitation the families that live in precarious settings. This research had as a general objective
to investigate the understanding about the participation of the families that live in da Fe I
community, candidates to be benefited to PMCMV.And as specific objectives: a) to make the
description of Colonia Antonio Aleixo; b) register the social economic profile of da fe I
community families candidates to the program and selected to the research; c) to investigate the
understanding of the participation of these selected families. .We adopted a qualitative research,
having 12 families as participantes and with the use of the following instruments and technics:
social economic forms with closed questions; semi structured interviews; non sistematic
observation with registration in field diary; domiciliary visits; documantal research. For the
analysis of the quantitative datas was used descriptive statistics, and for the interviews and field
diary was used content analysis according to Bardin (2011). ). From the obtained results, we
can infer that despite the social stigma, the Colonia Antonio Aleixo is a neighborhood with a
good fisical structure, and has strong leaderships that strive constantly for the dwellers' rights.
Concerning the interviewees of the reseach, they are specified for being families in situation of
social vulnerability, since they don't have an educational qualification and don't dispose of
sufficient basic resource for the survival of their families. From the participation, the candidates
don`t know how to difine it and hardly participate of the community strugle. The only form of
expressed participation was through meetings, but when they attend to some meetings they
don`t express their opinions. A few of them are involved in some communitarian institutions
and it`s known that this participation must be conditioned to some direct benefits.
Contradictorily, the majority self avaluate that the degree of participation is good and believe
that the community has the potential to solve social problems when united. In this way there is
a strong disinterest and absense of communitarian participation by theses PMCMV candidate
families despite the many institutions that strugle for the communitarian cause. We conclude
that a culture of effective participation of the families in social interest programs of habitation
needs to be concolidated, on the other hand, it`s necessary that the social workers enable the
families to such an end, being able to use the community psychology references for this
