Nas mãos da justiça e na boca do povo: criminalidade feminina e papéis de gênero na Amazônia (1890-1915)

Abstract

Bringing as the central theme the discussion of the relationship between crime and gender in the city of Manaus, at the period called Belle Époque, this work aims to comprehend, by the analysis of police, judicial and press sources, how the dynamics of female crime worked in this town. To do so, we will examine the regulations produced by the police and the justice system, such as procedural and criminal laws for the proposed period, seeking to relate these legal apparatuses to the built of gender stereotypes, in a society that was going through a renewal process of values and ideals; police and judicial sources with the intention of understanding the panorama of the crimes committed by these women, drawing up a profile of them based on the information available in the documentation, and through the narratives presented, recognizing the general context in which these crimes occurred. It is also our intention, especially through press sources, to investigate how that society dealt with those crimes and those women, how it comprehended and what it said about them. Doing this, our intention is to contribute to the consolidation of this research field in the region, opening new paths and possibilities to future researchers.
