Resumo

The Units of Conservation (UC's) are territorial space and its environmental resources, including waters, with natural features relevant, legally established by public authorities, with conservation objectives and limits set out under the special administration, which is implement adequate safeguards to protect the environment. The Area of Environmental Protection (APA) is a category of Conservation Units (UC's) that consist of public areas and / or private whose aim is to discipline the process of occupation of land and promote the protection of biotic and abiotic resources within its boundaries to ensure the welfare of human populations living there, protect or improve the local ecological conditions and maintain cultural landscapes and relevant attributes. The APA should have a Council and planning tools. The Council will be chaired by the body responsible for its administration and composed of representatives of public agencies, organizations and the civilian population. And the instruments of planning are: the ecological-economic zoning plan and the ecological-economic zoning. O is done in accordance with the conditions biotic, geological and cultural area, setting standards for use, to achieve is the objectives of the APA. The management plan, in turn, is a tool for planning official, is prepared in a participatory manner, defining the actions for the protection, indicating those responsible for their implementação. Then, management should be based on one of these instruments of planning. Thus, characterizing the process of creation, use and management of the APA "Cave of Maroaga," that through the historical elements-factors for the development and legislation, geographic characteristics and management measures. Thus, this study tried to identify and characterize the emerging model of protected area in the world, in Brazil, particularly as the model of protected areas in the state of Amazon and its potential economic value, specifically, the Environmental Protection Area (APA) "Cave of Maroaga" the city of Presidente Figueiredo.
