Resumo
This research considers the watershed as a unit of socio-environmental analysis where the social demands of the groups that occupy and build this space are manifested. Under this approach, the Geosystem methodology was developed to analyze the natural aspects, without disregarding the social aspects, relating them in a socio- environmental analysis. The selected area was the Franco hydrographic sub-basin, West Zone of the city of Manaus, the classification of hydrographic sub-basin stems from the fact that the Igarapé do Franco consists of one of the tributaries of the Igarapé do Mindu. Water pollution and the process of occupation of the banks are of essential importance in this study. In this way, the occupation process in this sub-basin was studied, associating it with the socio-environmental impacts resulting from a first phase, originated by types of occupation where the appropriation of the environment — is structured by demands determined by the need to live in an urban area — and, then, by the impacts caused by the planning of the territory by the state. In the 1950s, due to the urban expansion of Manaus, the banks of the Franco, were occupied by irregular housing, later, in 2010, the government started the process of eviction of the area, in order to make an environmental recovery. Through document research, bibliographic review, analysis of satellite images from the last decade and field work, it was possible to understand the process of occupation of the aforementioned watershed and the socio-environmental impacts. With this, we intend to contribute to the study of Physical Geography, in a complex systematic and social analysis.
