Mulheres do novo século: a condição feminina no Amazonas (1900-1910): um olhar a partir das representações da imprensa amazonense

Abstract

The dissertation addresses the representations of women produced and disseminated by Amazonian periodicals at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, at which time the State of Amazonas undergoing a period of economic expansion of rubber exports. Experiencing major transformations, the capital of Amazonas has undergone a make a sharp modernization provided by the new economy. Among the images of modernity brought by the "new century" XX, were those of the "new woman" whose visibility in the public arena seemed to unsettle and intimidate society, since their practices went to confront the traditionalism of the then prevailing patriarchal society. Periodicals were witnesses of these transformations and their positions, sometimes conflicting, contradictory, indicating how the society of the period thought and felt those transformations.
