Resumo
The main purpose of a pavement structure is to guarantee traffic at any time of the year
and under any climatic condition, providing users with comfort and safety. The control of the
reflection of cracks in pavements is fundamental for the good functional and structural
performance of the road, as well as for the economic effectiveness of pavement restoration. In
this context, the acceptance of the restoration system with natural jute fiber geogrid should be
extended, as it provides an excellent alternative for the control of cracks in the asphalt layer.
This paper presents the main structural benefits of including geogrids in asphalt paving works,
within a technical-economic approach. This dissertation presents a proposal for the
reinforcement of asphalt pavement with a geogrid manufactured with natural jute fiber. The use
of this material was verified to avoid the reflection of cracks between an old coating and a new
layer of asphalt. In order to evaluate the reflection of cracks, specimens prepared with asphalt
mixture and natural jute fiber geogrid were tested. The specimens were subjected to induced
moisture tests and the jute fiber under study was also characterized, Marshall's tests and fiber
puching were performed in a small box simulating the asphalt layer in order to prove its strength
and the durability of the asphalt pavement. With the results of the tests, it was obtained that the
presence of a jute fiber geogrid can be incorporated in an asphalt layer, with that the jute fiber
geogrid can prevent the reflection of cracks from the lower layer to the upper layer and increases
the life usefulness and resistance of the layer.
