Resumo
Mycobacteria leprae is the etiological agent of leprosy, considered a disease of chronic
infection, of slow evolution and with adequate treatment leads to cure. Being of high
infectivity, the disease presents low morbidity, since the majority of the world
population naturally has resistance to the etiological agent. Leprosy predominates in
economically poor countries, countries with poor basic sanitation infrastructure.
Respectively, in 2018, India, Indonesia and Brazil were the countries that had the most
occurrences of new cases in the world. The present study aimed to characterize the
epidemiological profile of leprosy in the Health Region of Rio Juruá-AM in the period
of January 2001 to December 2018. The study is quantitative, described and
retrospective with geographic distribution in health. There is a decrease in the disease,
so from 2001 to 2009 there was a decrease, with a small increase in the period 2010-
2012, falling again from 2013 to 2018. In relation to the detection coefficient in children
under 15 years of age, the average is 16.2 and considers a high rate. The years with
the highest means in the detection coefficient was from 2001 to 2005 with very high
rates, between 2006 and 2018 there were alternation between medium and high. The
disease represents a public health problem despite all efforts and decrease in new
cases The notes and georeferenced data may contribute to the active search of new
