Envelhecimento ativo em um contexto vulnerável: a história de vida de seu Moa por uma perspectiva salutogênica

Resumo

Life expectancy has increased, however, living in vulnerable contexts does not necessarily mean living well and aging actively. In this study, we investigated active and healthy ageing in a vulnerable context of Northern Brazil from a salutogenic perspective. Qualitative research was conducted focusing on the life story of Mr. Moa (81 years old), whose biographical narrative was examined through a thematic analysis. Mr. Moa´s life experiences in childhood, adulthood and old age were permeated by stressors such as hunger, child labor, accidents, illness, and loss of loved ones. However, coping strategies were identified, including social support, access to formal education, inventions to make a world to live in, faith/religion, active participation in the community in cinematographic projects and bodily practices. Salutogenesis allowed us to observe that these elements suggest a strong sense of coherence in ageing, evidenced in the ability to manage available resources and significance as a motivation to continue living actively. The unique life story presents lessons that serve as advice for a good life even in a vulnerable context. Recognizing the elderly as capable and participating in the community is an action to confront principles of a neoliberal society that values only the youngest. Salutogenesis can provide an interpretation based on health promotion for active ageing, health and wellbeing of the elderly as a human right.
