A cidade e as águas enquanto dimensão simbólica entre os habitantes do igarapé de Educandos - Manaus/AM

Abstract

This dissertation presents the life dynamics from those who live along the banks of a water stream, called Igarapé do Educandos, in Manaus. Focused on those whose windows face the river: residents of stilt houses, people whose lives are marked by the waters , especially during the flood season. I made a reflection about how the city built ways to relate with the waters: as much as the people pollute and degrade the water, their daily lives revolve around the river. These residents create classifying ways when dealing with the waters, being able to perceive them as violent, dangerous, risky, dirty, causing disorder and, at the same time, place of work and passage or object of a scenario. These classifying ways given to the water reveal a relationship conflictual and as well an object of contemplation and closeness. The sociability present among the residents led me to reflect that categories such as alleys and wooden plank bridges, called marombas, are spaces for the development of proximity and references to understand wetlands. Street-alley-house-maromba constitutes a network of transit, proximity and neighborhood that takes place through the recognition of the same experience: the flood. In this game of perceptions, I point out that the idea of interstices is important to understand the spaces of connection between city-river, both in the specificities of a city intersected by waters like Manaus, as well as other cities bordered by rivers.
