Resumo

The present research aims to present a clipping of the artistic path of the Amazonian artist Otoni Mesquita, in the decade of 1979 and 1989, in order to understand the historical and aesthetic influences and how he was able to shed light on the collective imaginary of the Amazon. The work is approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering areas such as art, history, philosophy, sociology and economic sciences. In conjunction with the qualitative approach, the research analyzes the retrospect of the Manauara society in the period of the historical cutout cited, rescuing the artist's main theoretical bases, the themes he frequently uses, the presence and meanings of the feminine in his work, and its correlations with habits, customs, and traditions of the Amazonian peoples. The path taken in the research made it possible and still does make it to have an insight into how the Amazonian art needed and needs to be, for many times validated outside its region to then gain visibility. In the interweaving of the collected data: the representations of Manaus reconstructing popular and student political organizations, the meeting of groups restructuring the notion of freedom through art and through the resistance of the representativeness of the Amazonian people, resignifying more than forests, wild animals, and indigenous people, but rather, a great communion of peoples who have found a way to live and survive based on their culture
