Resumo
The present work deals with Japanese immigration in Brazil, which was the result of a Japanese-Brazilian state project initiated by a contract for the concession of Amazonian lands in exchange for the occupation of Japanese immigrants and regional development. Unlike Japanese migrations in Southeastern Brazil, in migrations to the Amazon region, the role of the State was decisive both in recruitment, preparation, transport, and in their settlement in the colonies. The arrival of the first groups of Japanese immigrants in Amazonas was part of an agricultural colonization project in the interior of the Amazon, encouraged by the developmental immigration policy of the governments of Pará and Amazonas and the Japanese emigration policy aimed at expanding the Japanese area of influence that occurred in the first half of the 20th century. Based on data obtained through bibliographical, documental and field research, I analyze the political and economic effects of the presence of Japanese immigrants in the State of Amazonas with a focus on the case study of Parintins-AM and finally evaluate this Japanese immigration process in the period under review. As a result, the study and bibliographical research and document analysis made it possible to situate how this emigration/immigration took place involving State policy in both countries, as well as its rupture and expulsion from the contracted program due to political obstacles and the outbreak of the Second World War. It also locates the acclimatized jute crop as an opening for agricultural development in the Amazon.
