Resumo
The World Health Organization estimates that of every 10 individuals in the world, one is over 65 years old, the age at which the individual is considered elderly. Loss of muscle mass is one of the main consequences of aging. This process, known as sarcopenia, can begin as early as age 30 and accelerate after age 60. Sarcopenia is caused by several factors, including decreased production of anabolic hormones such as testosterone, reduced physical activity, and poor diet. The present study identified the normative values of strength in the lower limbs of elderly women in the Program Idoso Feliz Participa Sempre – PIFPS at UFAM. 212 elderly people took part in the study, of which 37 were men aged 70.5 ± 8.04 years and 175 women aged 70.8 ± 6.40 years. The elderly performed a general average of 13.05 ± 3.68 repetitions and 13.03 ± 3.60 for the men. The following age groups were identified for men: 11.50 (60-64 years), 12.78 (65-69 years), 15.18 (70-74 years), 12 (75-79 years), 12.25 (80-84 years old) and 10.50 (85-89 years old). For women, the following were observed: 13.11 (60-64 years), 13.55 (65-69 years), 13.02 (70-74 years), 12.95 (75-79 years), 11.45 (80-84 years), 8.5 (85-89 years) and 17 (90-94 years). We conclude that all values obtained are within the normative standards established internationally.
