Resumo

The Fabaceae family comprises about 727 genera and 19,325 species in the world containing many reports in the literature about the phytochemical studies of various species, however there is a shortage on the chemical composition of their woods. The genus Pithecellobium has approximately 120 species, however chemical studies are limited to seventeen species whose reports are of flavonoids, triterpenes, steroids, saponins and coumarins. In order to contribute to the phytochemical study of the Fabaceae family and the genus Pithecellobium, the wood of Pithecellobium racemosum was submitted to a phytochemical study and antibacterial assay. The chromatographic fractionation of hexane, methanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts of P. racemosum residues resulted in the isolation and identification of spinasterone, spinasterol, esterified derivative of spinasterol, oleanolic acid and 3α,21α-dihydroxy-olean-12-en- 28-oic, this being the first report of spinasterone, oleanolic acid and 3α,21α-dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic in the genus Pithecellobium. The isolated substances were identified by uni and bidimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
