Resumo

This project appeared by the necessity of cut prices in the production of petroleum and gas, to do that we choose one of the most expensive phases, the well drilling. The drilling fluid is directly involved in the price of drilling and it act in many functions, the main component of a water based fluid is the bentonite. This work is about a characterization of new lowland clay found at sedimentation plain of metropolitan region of Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, to use with well drilling fluids. The samples was characterized by Particle Size, Density, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence, Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), Specific Area, Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Rheology. The main constituent of the five samples is kaolinite, illite and quartz, however, a mottled sample of the lowland region of Ariaú River showed montmorillonite in its composition, and the results were promising when compared with raw clay commonly used on processing industries, pointing to new academic or industrial studies.
