Abstract

The general aim of this research is to describe the toponymic signs referring to the municipalities of the state of Amazonas used by the Translation Coordination team - CTRAD/UFAM, in institutional translation and interpreting work. Specifically, we sought to identify, catalog, classify, and describe the publicly accessible toponymic signs available on the online platforms of TV UFAM, Letras Libras da UFAM, and UFAM itself. We also carried out a bibliographical review of toponymic works, particularly those focusing on Libras in the Amazon region. For the research, only sign toponyms were included, and toponyms referenced by typing were excluded. In addition to the signs for the municipalities, we also included the toponyms Amazonas (state) and Amazônia (biome) and two variations of municipal names that occurred in the videos analyzed. This information was organized into LexicographicToponymic Sheets based on Miranda (2020) and Ferreira (2020), following the methodological assumptions of Sousa and Quadros (2019), Sousa (2022b), and Miranda (2021). The results of the research showed that most of the signs observed have an iconic motivation (physical or cultural) and can also be made by transliterating the initial letter or by combining both. Among the findings of the research, we highlight the use of a methodological procedure that can be replicated in future investigations into toponymy in Libras.
