Abstract

The production of housing is widespread interest to society, besides being a basic necessity for reproduction of life is also of interest to those who profit from their provision. The low-income population by not being met by the state without income and attractive to private sector housing production produces housing alternatives for their reproduction. However, for the production of housing is necessary appropriation of urban space and in a capitalist society space is a commodity, so are delimited spaces for ownership interest. Thus, a contradiction of spatial production between production space guided by economic and political needs and reproduction of space as condition, means and product of the reproduction of life. Housing is the most visible form of social differentiation which is realized in the urban landscape, and can be used to understand the socio-spatial segregation, therefore the production of urban space. In this context, in order to understand the production of housing and its context with the production of urban space, was defined as study area the city of Itacoatiara -AM. To conceptualize different forms of housing in Itacoatiara were readings held academic texts, reading and analysis of reports of public policies to understand how the state acts through the production of housing held by low- income and as he himself produces. From field research achievements were localized, characterized and named forms of housing produced in Itacoatiara between the years 2000-2004. Later was bounded one of the neighborhoods originating in the production of housing, the Mamoud Amed neighborhood to better approach and understanding of the reality of the suburbs. Even with the difficulties in the neighborhood and its socio-spatial segregation in it are created to reproduce social relations of life and thus has a subjective meaning to its residents, who have to live in the neighborhood and intense social life. So the suburb should also be seen, beyond what it lacks, but also what he has.
