Vestir os índios - o vestuário ocidental como invenção da civilidade no Grão-Pará (1757-1798)

Abstract

This dissertation aims to discuss and analyse the civilization project idealized by the Marquis of Pombal through the implementation of the Directory of Indians, a law enacted in 1757 that aimed to radically alter the modus operandi of the villages of Grão-Pará. Our attention is focused on the imposition of western clothing, provided in the Articule 15 of the Directory. We show in this research the articulations and mechanisms of the State to put Pombal's illustrated thinking into practice with indigenous populations through the policies mentioned in the Directory, such as mixed marriage and the implantation of cotton culture. On the other hand, we also tried to demonstrate how these practices affected the social and cultural dynamics of these indigenous populations.
