A dimensão do ser-homem na vivência do câncer de próstata: possibilidades à luz da Teoria Rogeriana

Abstract

Cancer is one of the most complex and current public health problems that the Brazilian health system faces, because of their epidemiological, social and economic magnintude. In the case of the prostate cancer, epidemiological data report that there is a significant growth in Brazil. This study’s goal was to understand, by speech, the experience of being-man with prostate cancer, by Carl Rogers's theory. This research is qualitative and it was developed according to the precepts of the phenomenological method, which aims to capture the essence of the experienced phenomenon. Participants were five men aged between fifty and seventy years, pacients of urology of the Amazon Oncology Control Center Foundation. The data collection was conducted through individual phenomenological interviews around the experiences with the disease. The sessions were audio recorded and transcribed. The data analysis was made in accordance with the guidelines of Martins and Bicudo, the convergence of meaning units were sought, which were transformed into thematic categories and they contributed to the synthesis and comprehensive analysis of being-man-with-prostate-cancer. The transcribed and analyzed data revealed that the chance to get Amazon reports brought the privilege of overcome the generalized tremors about this disease; the fear of not continue working was much more present than the fear of sexual impotence; the mourning gave way to self-esteem and persistence. It was seen that the accurate knowledge of the health situation by the patient is essential piece to be followed medical recommendations. It was seen also that the lack of economic resources means an impediment to quick solution to their dilemmas. Thereby, there is the opportunity to meet and propose strategies based on congruence, unconditional positive acceptance and empathy, that enable the actualizing tendency, able to overcome the barriers encountered by seniors of Amazonas coexisting with prostate cancer.
