Abstract

Getúlio Vargas' rise to power in 1930 marked the beginning of an era of profound changes in national and regional politics in Brazil. In the state of Amazonas, these changes were especially striking over the twenty-four years of Getulista rule and influence. During this period, periodicals played a fundamental role in shaping opinions, becoming essential pieces for historical research. Thus, this dissertation aims to explore the political dynamics of Amazonas at this crucial time, focusing on the analysis of the newspapers A Crítica and Jornal do Comércio. By examining these periodicals, we seek not only to understand the constantly evolving political compositions, but also the agreements and disagreements that have shaped the region's political landscape. By investigating the individual and collective trajectories of political actors, we intend to shed light on the complexities and nuances of political disputes in the state. Particular attention will be given to key events, such as the Querista movement and the crisis of the 1950s, highlighting especially the political crisis that followed the election of Vargas and Maia. Our analysis will also address the impact of Vargas' suicide on the press and subsequent elections, revealing the distrust among Vargas' supporters and the distancing of party alliances throughout his government. We hope that this study contributes significantly to a deeper understanding of the political dynamics in Amazonas during this crucial period in Brazilian history. By offering valuable insights into the events and transformations that marked this era, we hope to enrich existing knowledge about regional and national politics in Brazil.
