Introduction: The incidence of breast cancer is among the highest among malignant neoplasms affecting women, being the leading cause of cancer death in the female population in Brazil. Objective: To analyze the proportional mortality from breast cancer in Brazil and its regions from 1996 to 2021. Methodology: This is an ecological descriptive study, using data extracted from DATASUS. The proportional mortality rate for breast cancer was calculated per 100,000 deaths in women. Results: Between 1996 and 2021, 53.07% of deaths in adult women in Brazil were due to breast cancer. When calculating the proportional mortality rates for breast cancer, the highest rate was in the South region, with approximately 6,128 breast cancer deaths per 100,000 total deaths. The Southeast region ranked second, with approximately 5,824 breast cancer deaths per 100,000 general deaths. In the Central-West region, approximately 5,062 out of 100,000 deaths were due to malignant breast neoplasms. The Northeast and North regions ranked last, with approximately 4,579 and 3,728 breast cancer deaths per 100,000 deaths, respectively. Conclusion: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women in Brazil, with significant variation in proportional mortality rates among regions. This information can support specific health policies and prevention and treatment strategies.
