Tornando o Polo Industrial de Manaus mais verde: quando a proteção comercial se transforma em proteção ambiental

Resumo

Environmental labels are certifications that validate the good practices adopted by companies, fostering social awareness and environmental responsibility among consumers. This strategy, globally adopted since the 1970s, has proven to be an effective tool not only for enhancing innovation and corporate competitiveness but also for strengthening the commitment to environmental preservation. This study focuses on the benefits that environmental labels can potentially offer to products manufactured by the Manaus Industrial Pole, developing a methodological approach for beneficiary companies of research, development, and innovation resources to invest in Amazon rainforest conservation projects. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods, using the bibliometric tool VOSviewer for data analysis, along with insights gained from the implementation of the Amazon Label, according to Joint Order No. 268 of 2020 from the Ministry of Economy and Suframa, which did not achieve the expected success as a regional development policy. The methodology of this research facilitated the creation of the Socio-Environmental Performance Index (IDS), which guides companies in strengthening their social and environmental responsibility and market competitiveness. The index suggests a fair revision and harmonization of the indicators and grades of the Amazon Label, serving as a beacon to mobilize industries, particularly those in the computer goods sector, to direct up to R$1.6 billion annually in initiatives to mitigate the impacts of climate change, such as the recent severe drought in 2023, accelerating income and green employment, and enhancing biodiversity security. This socio-environmental certification underscores the Manaus Industrial Pole as the leading global project for the protection of living tropical forests, offering a competitive edge in both domestic and international markets. This study also makes a significant contribution to academic literature and has extensive practical applicability, potentially serving as a model for future research on public policies in special economic zones similar to the Manaus Free Zone.
