Mentalidade e residualidade do ano mil N'Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha

Abstract

The year one thousand built in the reduced and Christian world is the theme of the present research which investigated about the sertanejo medieval imaginary in Os Sertões, Euclides da Cunha. Anchored in bibliographical researches, the analysis of the work is taken from and literary and historical perspective according to Teoria da Residualidade Literária e Cultural (PONTES, 1999) and História das Mentalidades (DUBY, 1961). We have assumed that nothing is new in Literature and Culture and from the concept of Mentalities, which treats about the way of thought from an age, identifying and analyzing the way of individuals act and how some events are built and remain in the collective memory over time. We intend by means of those two theories emphasize Literature, reinforcing character Antonio Conselheiro as a mystic and Catholic leader, bias millenariasm and messianism, verifying the evaluations of historians and literati undertook in relation to that contiguity and yet reinforcing the social, economic and political conditions of the First Brazilian Republic as well as how those structures cooperate with the endurance of medieval sertão.
