INTRODUCTION: The use of health applications for smartphones as a digital intervention
in people's health status is growing more and more, since this technological resource could
help overcome geographical distances, in addition to facilitate the access to information for
different types of populations. It includes the need to guide patients to self-care with intestinal
stomies, through a tool with information for the improvement of the routines of exchange of
the collecting bag and care with the stomy, reducing the risk of leaks, complications at home
and stimulating its independence. OBJECTIVES: Develop an Information and
Communication Technology with content directed to assist the self-care of people with
intestinal ostomies in the Amazon context. To synthesize and gather the contents on self-care
with intestinal stomies from a bibliographic survey that present scientific evidence for the
structuring of a technological product. To understand how Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory
can be used in the process of developing a new information and communication technology.
To discuss how Orem's self-care theory concepts were integrated into the application's
interface and functionality elements. METHOD: This study was applied in the modality of
technological production, of the type of methodological development research. For the
development of the application, the Prototyping Cycle was used. RESULTS: The application
"EstomAM" has 44 screens, 1 main menu with 7 input icons, 5 videos with captions and 19
images with the step by step care of intestinal ostomy in the exchange of the collector bag.
The application can be downloaded through the Android platform and does not have the need
for internet connection for browsing. CONCLUSION: This study made it possible to
describe how the precepts of Dorothea Orem's Theory were inserted into an application to
assist the self-care of people with intestinal ostomies so that it can be used in situations where
the nurse does not have the presence to mediate the individual's self-care actions.
