Resumo
Temporary fixed prostheses are cemented with provisional cements, which must be auxiliary
cementations in the restoration during the masticatory function. One of the agents used for this
purpose is zinc oxide eugenol cement, which has in its composition a component with
cytotoxicity and base and can cause polymerization of resinous materials. Copaiba oil is a
phytotherapeutic widely used by the Amazonian population with recognized antimicrobial and
anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to high biocompatibility. The objective was to
formulate an experimental cement with Copaiba essential oil and zinc oxide and to compare
provisional crowns retention cemented using the temporary cement RelyX Temp . Twenty
human third molars was included on PVC contaning self-curing resinand prepared in a
standardized way. Ten provisional crowns were cemented with copaiba cement and 10 parallel
with RelyX Temp NE®. After twenty-four hours submerged in artificial saliva, the crowns were
pulled in an universal testing machine at 1.0 mm/min. The results were selected for Mann-
Whitney's statistical tests. The formulation and use to cement based on zinc oxide and copaiba for temporary cementation was possible and highest strengths with copaiba cement showed tensile strength when the crowns were cemented with RelyX Temp ®.
