Resumo

This dissertation, allocated in the Education, State, Public Policy and Regional Development Research Line of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE) of the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM)public policies and the organization of primary education in the Amazonas Province during the end of the second reign. Its general objective is to analyse the directions of Public Policies for Primary Education in the Province of Amazonas (1872-1889), focusing on the specific conceptions of childhood that emerged from the tensions around the actions of the Imperial State. As specific, we list: Characterize the organization of the Province of Amazonas and the social changes that took place at the end of the Empire; Identify the type of education that the State designed for children in the Province of Amazonas; To understand the conceptions of childhood that were in dispute within society and the State in the period. The methodological design built for the development of research starts from the Historical method, between the dialogue of the New Cultural History and the Bourdiesian thought. From bibliographical research and the survey of publications linked directly and indirectly to the themes of the research, a dialogue was built between the authors and the proposed work. Later, in the exploratory phase, visits were made to the Public Archive of the State of Amazonas, Cultural Center of Amazonian Peoples and specialized sites such as the National Library and the Carlos Chagas Foundation, the Center for Research Libraires and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, there was at that time the survey, categorization and analysis of documents, constituting a documentary research, on the Laws of the Brazilian Empire, Reports of the Presidents of the Province, Regulations, Census, newspapers and magazines related to the topics studied and the historical period analyzed. The research results demonstrate the actions and silences of the State regarding the education of children and reveal how they were seen or not during the end of the Brazilian Empire in the north region.
