Resumo
Black flies are insects of great importance in the transmission of etiologic agents to humans and other vertebrates. Transmit to humans and some species of filarial among them in the Amazon region is Mansonella ozzardi (Manson, 1897). The Upper Rio Negro is lacking in epidemiological studies and is considered by researchers as a region of many diseases. This study aimed to identify the current status of transmission of M. ozzardi nine coastal communities in the Middle Rio Içana and interference in daily activities of individuals within these communities, but also to study the seasonality, biting black flies and natural infection, and the rate of parasitic infestation of the inhabitants of coastal communities. We performed three consecutive days catch of blackflies in the period from 06:00 to 18:00 hours with 1 hour intervals. Parallel to this activity capture, we recorded data on the temperature (C) Relative Humidity (%) and brightness (lux) to verify the possible influence of these factors on the biting black flies. Blood was collected by finger prick for mounting slides to verify the infestation by M. ozzardi of the inhabitants. He was captured a total of 3393 specimens of the species Simulium argentiscutum (Shelley & Luna Dias, 1980). It was observed that Simulium argentiscutum presented seasonally differentiated in the studied communities with abundance prevalent during the rainy season. The biting activity was relatively uniform throughout the day, with increased activity early in the morning period and the beginning of the afternoon, in the morning and that the intensity of the biting activity is higher than in the afternoon. We also observed that the natural infection rate is considered high in the communities studied in the Middle Rio Içana and should be treated as a public health issue. The daily activities of agriculture / fishery showed a higher prevalence of M. ozzardi, followed by craft activities and this prevalence increases with age of the population of these communities.
