Resumo

This feminist ethnography addresses the experiences of women who have decided to become mothers in an urban Latin American and Western culture, where appreciates the free choice of individuals and the search for a unique experience. Through the interlocution with 6 women-mothers (Brazilian and Venezuelan), the categorization of public speeches shared in the social universe of blogs and publications of the social networks Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, the representations of motherhood arising from different experiences of women-mothers are analyzed informed -high-informed- and psychologized from middle layers. Women who are married, separated, single mothers, building a “unique” maternal experience as elements common to others, such as valuing children as subjects with rights and needs for specialized care, guided by psychological theories. Through the dialogue with feminist intellectuals, academic concepts such as “voluntary, safe, pleasant and socially supported motherhood” can be listed as “feminist motherhood”, contributing to the categorization of emic concepts of “conscious”, “democratic” or “respectful” motherhoods. Which creates in the Latin American scene tensions and agonies between the experiences represented by the mother subjects and the institutions and social actors that are part of the context. However, the representations of motherhood built from the women themselves may be a maternal women's movement that promotes social changes.
